The Drexel University Young Dragons Middle School Summer STEAM Program offers a series of free weekly camps for rising 6th-8th grade students residing in or attending school in West Philadelphia. The program, run by Drexel's ExCITe Center, focuses on hands-on projects and activities that integrate science, technology, engineering, arts/athletics, and mathematics (STEAM). Students engage with the scientific method, engineering process, and arts & design to foster creativity, problem-solving, and self-expression. Past activities have included Battle Bots, Python coding, music production, visual arts, virtual reality, sports science, and exploring the engineering principles behind sneaker design. The curriculum is designed to make STEAM subjects relevant and exciting, with opportunities for field trips to locations like the Franklin Institute. The program aims to develop computational thinking and digital literacy skills, preparing students for future academic and career paths in STEAM fields.
Every weekday, campers start at 9 AM with a game or icebreaker activity, then work on the week's topic until a 10:30 AM break for food and conversation, and continue learning until noon.
The ideal student is a middle schooler (rising 6th-8th grade) from West Philadelphia who is eager to explore diverse STEAM topics through engaging, hands-on projects and collaborative learning.
