The camp offers an inclusive, hands-on, problem-based learning experience guided by Temple's College of Engineering mentors, focusing on real-world applications and interdisciplinary STEM exploration.
Temple's Philadelphia Youth for STEM (PY-STEM) is a one-week experiential learning program for middle schoolers interested in exploring science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The program features hands-on, problem-based learning experiences, contextual learning through lab tours and demonstrations, and opportunities to develop teamwork and leadership skills. Participants will collaborate with mentors from Temple's College of Engineering as they explore the interdisciplinary nature of engineering, design thinking, and problem-solving. Students will learn basic coding skills using open-source hardware and software, program microcontrollers to sense and react to environmental inputs like moisture, sound, and light, and practice prototyping and manufacturing skills. The camp culminates with students presenting their new product ideas. The curriculum emphasizes diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM fields, and students will be challenged to learn about autonomous programmable robots and different areas of electrical and computer engineering.
A typical day involves hands-on, problem-based learning experiences, lab tours, and demonstrations, with academic sessions running from 9 AM to 4 PM.
This program is best for middle schoolers (rising 6th to 8th graders) who are curious about STEM and want to explore engineering through interactive, project-based learning, regardless of prior experience.
